Can I plant the garlic I get from the supermarket?

Expert Answer

You could, but supermarket garlic is not always the most flavourful, and it might be treated with an anti-sprouting agent that may hinder growth. It’s better to buy garlic that’s for planting. You’ll find dozens of varieties, from spicy to mild and hardneck or softneck types. Softneck garlic is good in a milder climate because it matures quickly. Hardneck varities tend to be harder and they produce the edible scapes that some folks enjoy.

Once you harvest your first crop, you can save some for replanting. The largest cloves will yield the largest bulbs.
