A unique Asian vegetable with tender leaves and a crisp stem - genius!

Chinese stem lettuce is grown for its thick, crunchy stem, often sliced into stir-fries, soups, salads, or pickles. Harvest once stems reach around 20 cm. They have a mild, slightly bitter flavour similar to regular lettuce.

Planting Instruction
  • How To Sow: Choose a well drained site in full sun or part shade. In trays sprinkle seeds on soil surface. When large enough, thin or transplant them to 30 - 45cm apart. When planted directly in seedbed cover to depth of 5mm.
  • Seedling Care: Keep seedbed or trays evenly moist during the germination period of 7-14 days. Apply fertiliser two weeks after germination for healthier plants and maximum crop. Protect your seedlings from slugs, snails and insect pests; go to mcgregors.co.nz for appropriate plant health and pest control products.
  • Hints & Tips: Harvest leaves young and wait for thick, tender stems. The seed contained in this packet is packed in dry air and sealed in foil to protect it from moisture and sunlight (heat). If you need to store seed do so in a cool, dark location.
  • These seeds are not pasteurised.
